Happy new year everyone!

I've had such a lovely holiday.  Being at home (for the longest holiday since I started uni) has been fantastic!  Seeing my family again, cooking Christmas dinner for the first time ever, catching up on reading and good tele!

I've done quite a bit of painting while I've been here but since mum doesn't have a scanner I'll be uploading everything once I'm home! :)

2012 was was such a good year and 2013 looks set to be just as good!  Among other things, I'll be going to LeakyCon in the summer, going on a Highland trip with the Harry Potter Society in a month and then in September will be starting my final year of uni!  :O

I'm also considering starting up an etsy shop on the recommendation of someone who bought some of my artwork at a charity sale for HPSoc. I've never done anything like this before - I have no idea how much to sell my work for, how to organise prints or even if people would even be interested in buying them. If anyone has any advice on that front I'd be grateful!

Anyway, I hope you all have a great 2013!

:)

I've not written on here for ages but suddenly got an influx of views and felt a bit embarrassed at how out of date my journal was.  Anyway, it prompted me to update it a little!
I've now finished my second year as a music student and can not wait to start my third! All the courses are ones that I've chosen and ones I really want to study - so no more keyboard skills or style studies!! harahh!

I've recently finished Game of Thrones - the book that is, not the TV series, though I am looking forward to that too!- and it's now my new obsession.  I absolutely loved it!  It's taking some self control not to get the second one - I promised myself I'd finish the other books on my shelf before that.  Though, I reckon I'll have to be quick; those books are so long, I don't want to be reading one during term time or I'll never get any work done!

I looked through my gallery today and there's some pretty shocking work in there.  The more recent stuff is ok, I'm quite proud of a few but there are a couple that make me cringe.  I don't want to take them down though, at least not yet.  I was proud of them once too or I would never have put them up.  I think it's good to keep looking at old work because it lets you see how much you've improved. I guess I've discovered that digital art is still not really my area of expertise.  I'm enjoying more traditional stuff again, namely watercolours and am starting to settle on my own style. I'm constantly being inspired by the talented folks on DA and have learnt SO much from them - I'm really thankful!

It's amazing how much time you can spend browsing Gimp tutorials. I've been at it all week, I swear it's taking over my life! I just keep thinking of study leave and all that time I won't have for art and other fun stuff...So I should make the most of now, right?

I've scanned in a load of drawings but I'm using the University scanners and the only one free was the crappy one.  Actually, they're all pretty crappy.  So I've been trying to clean them up on Gimp but it's taking a while.  Is there a fast way to do it?  And while we're on the subject, does anyone know exactly what an Alpha channel does? I've seen it on tutorials but I don't really understand what it's for :s

Thanks to some wicked art out there, I've been intrigued and curious for a while now to read the Percy Jackson books by Rick Riordan.  I found a beaten up copy in my local charity shop (My book budget has been slashed violently since starting uni) and have thus started.  It's surprisingly good!  I'm not too far through it mind, but what I've read has been great and it's definitely a page turner.  It's nice too, when you've been reading nothing but text books for months to give your brain a break and read some real books!

I've not been on Deviant Art for a while...partly because of vanity and worrying my stuff wasn't quite good enough, party because I've since started University and well, it does take up a fair bit of time! :P

Anyway, I'm back.  I would greatly appreciate constructive criticism for all my pictures (I know there's only three at the moment but I'm working on it) since this is a great way to learn and get better.

For instance, I've recently become interested in digital art (I'm using Gimp at the moment, since PS is a bit out of my price range) but am really still at beginner level, so any helpful hints anyone has would be MUCH appreciated!
That goes for everything else as well. It's so hard to spot mistakes in your own art work - well, it is for me at any rate! You really need that outside perspective.

Anyway, I hope this goes better than my first stint and I will try to keep things going!
